Paul the Octopus Predicts World Cup Winners
This octopus is known as the world’s greatest betting tipper, with an almost perfect record of predicting winners at the World Cup this year. Paul the octopus lives at the Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Obernausen and over the last few weeks has become somewhat of a celebrity in Germany after predicting their victories over Australia, Ghana, England and Argentina as well as their defeat by Spain.
The octopus even managed to predict Serbia’s defeat of Germany in the group stages, a result that almost no one else expected.
On Tuesday, in one of the most exciting bits of live television this year, he predicted that Spain would win the semi-final match which disappointed millions of Germans watching with baited breath. However, once again, his prediction proved to be correct when Carles Puyol’s header destroyed Germany’s hopes of reaching the final.
In a dramatic turn of events Paul has also started receiving death threats from Argentinean fans who are blaming him for their exit from the tournament. Who knows, Paul may appear on a sushi menu at any time now that the Germans are out.
One mustn’t forget that Paul originates from England; he was born in Weymouth and emigrated from the Weymouth Sea Life Park in 2006.
However, whilst residing in England he never showed any of his potential, Fiona Smith from the Sea Life Park said, 'He never made any predictions while he was living here but maybe he was waiting for a big event like the World Cup until he revealed his abilities.'
The Aquarium has announced that Paul is going to start making predictions on even more matches, it is expected that he will pick a winner in the final, the first time that he has predicted on a game that Germany is not involved in.
Before that he will be picking the winner of the Germany Uruguay match on Friday morning according to spokeswoman Tanja Munzig and then he’ll go on to pick the winner of Sunday’s final.
