Golden Boot Goes to Germany’s Thomas Mueller
Mueller is the second youngest player in history to receive the honour – second only to the legendary Pele who managed to net 6 goals during the 1958 World Cup at the tender age of 17.
In addition to taking home the Golden Boot, Mueller also received the Best Young Player award for his contribution to the tournament, the last of which was a goal in Germany’s third place match against Uruguay. The result was a hard earned 3-2 victory for Germany and confirmation of the Mueller magic the world had already witnessed in previous matches.
Fellow contenders for the prestigious title were David Villa of Spain, Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands and Diego Forlan of Uruguay – who ended up with the Golden Ball award for what can only be described at football finesse and an impressive 4th place finish for his side.
Mueller’s goal spree at World Cup 2010 started at Germany’s opener against Australia, in which he netted one goal. He then went on to score another 2 goals against England and his 4th in the quarterfinal match against Argentina. Mueller’s 5th and final goal came in the 3rd place match against Argentina – the first of a total of 3 German goals which resulted in the German side claiming 3rd place overall.
Here’s what the 20 year old midfielder had to say….
"Looking back, it's been an extraordinary development path, which nobody could have foreseen -- myself included…..
Normally you'd say a Champions League final would be the absolute highlight of your season, but then you go to a World Cup and take yet another step forward. It's unbelievable. Back in May, when I left Bayern and joined up with the national squad, I had a good feeling from the off. I sensed every player was utterly determined to do well at the World Cup."
