Spanish World Cup Team Greeted by 3 Million
Accompanied by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero – the triumphant Spaniards were paraded through the streets of Madrid and received superstar treatment. The team deserved all the VIP trimmings for securing Spain’s first ever World Cup victory over the Netherlands 1-0.
Man of the match Andres Iniesta netted Spain’s only goal in the second half of extra time. Flying from Johannesburg, the team arrived in Madrid 3 hours late but were greeted by hundreds at the airport before being expressed to an audience with King Juan Carlos and the Zarzuela Royal Palace.
Although the King did not attend the final in person, as an avid sports fan he praised the Spanish team on their remarkable efforts….
“You are an example to all of us, an example to the new generations of nobility, of teamwork and of fighting spirit. Thank you, champions, in the name of the royal family and of all Spaniards.”
From the Kings reception, the squads were greeted by Zapatero and his ministers at the Moncloa palace. The Prime Minister echoed the sentiments of the Spanish King saying...
“This cup belongs to all the Spaniards and players who have tried to win it for many generations,” He then went on to commend Andres Iniesta for achieving the only goal of the final and for honouring the memory of Daniel Jarque – the Spanish defender who tragically died last August at the age of 26 from a heart attack. Composed and modest, Iniesta had the following to say…
“Thank you for the reception. I am proud to form part of this team. This World Cup belongs to everyone.”
Zapatero acknowledged the efforts of manager Vicente del Bosque….
“This trophy is for all the Spanish football family, for the small clubs as well as the big clubs.”
Iker Casillas the Spanish captain reveled in the team’s success and had this to say to the public…
“The name of Spain is going to be in the highest place for four years. This cup is for all of you.” Casillas then lead his team through the city on a massive victory parade through the streets capital attended by approximately 3 million people.
