Capello may not start Rooney in Bulgaria clash
Fabio Capello has announced that he is prepared to drop Wayne Rooney from the starting eleven in England’s Euro qualifier with Bulgaria. Rooney has had a slow start to his season and missed Manchester United’s match against Fulham last week due to a stomach bug.
Capello has said that Rooney will only start on Friday if he is match-fit. Capello today watched Manchester United’s match against West Ham to check on Rooney’s fitness.
Rooney has not played full matches back to back for Manchester United since March, but luckily for him he scored today ending his draught of goals which had lasted since the Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich during which he injured his ankle.
In his entire England career he has only come on as a substitute four times, this includes his debut match for England. However, so far the only manager to use him as a sub is Sven Goran Eriksson.
Capello will be watching three matches today, Blackburn versus Arsenal, Blackpool verses Fulham and of course Manchester United versus West Ham. Capello has already shocked Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, he named Jack Wilshere, 18, as a member of the Under 21s squad, even though he played impressively against Hungary at Wembley.
Wenger said, “I am surprised Jack is not in the full England squad. For me, Jack has done well. He is the only player to have been selected in England from his generation at the age of 18.”
