Roy Hodgson moves to Liverpool for “Biggest job in club football”
It has been announced that Liverpool have signed Roy Hodgson as their new manager after a £2 million compensation package was agreed with Fulham.
Rafael Benitez is leaving Liverpool and Roy Hodgson will be taking over with the aim to restore Liverpool as a top four club after their disappointing season in which they finished seventh. Hodgson took Fulham to the Europa League final last season and it is hoped that he will manage to do the same for Liverpool.
Hodgson was signed just twenty eight days after Benitez left the club and has been given a three year contract. Benitez has now gone on to take over the Champions League winners inter Milan.
There were a number of names mentioned as choices for new Liverpool coach, but the club claims that Hodgson was always their number one.
Kenny Dalgish, who used to manage and play for Liverpool, was involved in the selection process along with managing director Christian Purslow. Hi is currently an ambassador the club’s academy and had recently stated that he would like to return to the post which he held in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, however, he was not considered as an option.
Hodgson has become Liverpool’s 18th manager and upon his appointment their website stated “A New Era Starts Today”.
Hodgson arrived at the club’s training ground for his first day of work and said, "This is the biggest job in club football and I'm honoured to be taking on the role of manager of Britain's most successful football club. I look forward to meeting the players and the supporters and getting down to work at Melwood."
Fulham are now looking for a replacement coach, the only word from them so far is a brief statement on their website, “Fulham confirm that at 9.20am this morning, Roy Hodgson resigned from his position of First Team Manager, effective immediately.”
It is thought that the ex England manager Sven Goran Eriksson is at the top of their list which also includes Tony Mowbray, Mark Hughes and Alan Curbishley.
