Serena Williams claims 13th Wimbledon Grand Slam title

Last updated: 04/07/2010 13:52

This spectacular victory will see Serena make it to sixth place on the list of women’s Grand Slam champions, ousting Billie Jean King. Williams currently boasts one French Open title, three U.S. Opens and five Australian Opens.

Turning to King in the Royal Box, a confident Serena called "Hey, Billie — I got you. This is No. 13 for me now.” Her success will see her join the ranks of great legends including Margaret Smith Court  with 24 Grand Slam titles, Steffi Graf with 22, Helen Wills Moody with 19 along with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert with 18.

Serena and her sister have won a total 9 of the 11 past Wimbledon tournaments with Venus last beating her sister back in 2008. This year saw Serena take on Zvonareva, the second lowest ranking female finalist to make it at Wimbledon. Despite a brave performance from the Russian player, Serena proved too powerful for her less experienced opponent and went on to lift the coveted Venus Rosewater Dish awarded by the Duke of Kent. Serena took 31 of 33 points when her first serve was good. She delivered a record 89 aces in the tournament, saving her fastest serve of 122 mph for a heart stopping ace in the final.

Commenting on her victory, Serena said that the win represents a dream come true. Paying tribute to Zvonareva she added that "She defines what being a champion and never giving up means." Zvonareva, meanwhile, admitted to a sense of grave disappointment. "Maybe I was not able to show my best today, but I think Serena just didn't allow me to show my best”, she said. Asked whether Serena is unbeatable, Zvonareva called Serena a “human being” and “not a machine”."You have to play your best. But if you do, you can do it”. A delighted Serena, meanwhile, posed for photographers on the balcony of the club entrance and was greeted by the wild applause of an admiring crowd.

Wimbledon fans will have no time to catch their breath as the countdown to the men’s final gets underway. Scheduled to take place this Sunday, Nadal will be hoping to land his second Wimbledon victory when he goes head to head with the Czech player, Tomas Berdych. Nadal is No.1 in the world and has won 25 out of 27 matches at Wimbledon conceding only to Federer in 2006 and 2007. The final will be Berdych’s first Grand Slam final and Nadal’s 10th making for a truly riveting match. Nadal lost out to the title at last year’s tournament due to tendinitis so it seems likely that he will be more eager than ever to reclaim his crown. All eyes will be watching very closely what promises to be one of the true highlights of the sporting calendar.
