Starspangledbanner races to victory at the Darley July Cup
Starspangled banner fought hard in the final furlong to win last week’s Darley July Cup at Newmarket narrowly beating Equiano.
The Australian bred Starspangledbanner demonstrated that he truly was a good favourite as he won the Darley July Cup in Newmarket last Friday. His Jockey Johnny Murtagh had a brilliant race and made the horse work hard, William hill had placed him the race favourite at 13 – 8 and he worked hard during the final meters to secure his victory.
Early in the race the group of fourteen runners split into two groups. Equiano was leading Alverta and Kingsgate Native down the centre of the track whilst Starspangledbanner lead a pack down the rail. Murtagh had chosen to stay by the rail early in the race, this was a risky move which didn’t look as if it was going to pay off.
Starspangledbanner was going well but he was always chasing Equiano and Alverta and was still a little way behind them with one furlong to go. However, in the final incline the horse and jockey let loose and started to gain ground. Using the last of his energy Starspangledbanner didn’t let Equiano get away and got across the line a neck ahead of his rival. Equiano came in second place with Alverta less than a length behind.
It is not clear whether Starspangledbanner should remain in training or retire on a high to a stud farm. It seems like he has already achieved more than expected winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot in June and then the triumph at Newmarket.
Equiano, who came in second is not yet thinking of retirement. His trainer Barry Hills has entered him into the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes on 20th August at York Racecourse. It is expected that there will be some great odds available so keep an eye on your favourite bookie as Equiano is sure to provide some great entertainment.
