Webber dominates to win the British Grand Prix

Despite some tensions in the Red Bull team, Webber had a flying start to the race and never looked back on his way to victory.

Mark Webber, sponsored by Red Bull made his win in the British Grand Prix look easy taking victory away from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton. Webber took an early lead after making a much better start than his team mate Sebastian Vettel, Vettel later tried to take the lead whilst going around the Copse but this game him a puncture which spoiled his race.

Hamilton took second place thanks to a bad start by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Mercedes Nico Rosberg came in third just ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button.

After the race Webber joked over the team radio, “Not bad for a number two driver”. Before qualifying the team decided to take the new front wing off his car as it was the only remaining one and give it to Vettel, hence Webber’s reference to himself as “number two driver”.

The latest result extends Hamilton’s lead over Button to 12 points in the World Championship. Webber is in third place 17 points behind Hamilton and Vettel is fourth.

Webber had claimed the race from the beginning making a brilliant start from the inside, slippery side of the grid. Vettel was squeezing him as they got closer to Copse corner and then he tried to sit it out with Webber as they went around the bend at 180mph. His rear right tyre was just touched by Hamilton as they went around the corner causing Vettel to run off the track which gave him a puncture that placed him at the back of the race.

However, Vettel only made one pit stop which was used to change his tyres, and he did incredibly well to manage to finish seventh overall. It seems that there is some tension though between the two team mates, after hearing about his “number two” comment Vettel said, “"Obviously I focus on myself and so does he I guess, especially after what happened in the past people have different opinions. I have opinions, I have my experiences and sometimes, good and bad, you get to know people a little better and see their true faces. So I think I have learned my lesson and focus on myself.”

For the first six laps of the race Hamilton was always within two seconds of Webber, but then Mark began to pull away and set a number of fastest laps in a row. Webber was pleased with his victory saying,

“I did the best job I could today and it worked out OK. I made a good start and was very keen obviously to make it my corner and it worked out OK for me. It was a good fight with Lewis. It was enjoyable, particularly the first part of the GP. It's very special for me to win here - it's been a special track for me and to win here and be alongside these guys (Hamilton and Rosberg) is amazing.”

Hamilton commented that he doesn’t “think it's a miracle result, it's a reflection of all the hard work the team put in. The car was nice to drive. It wasn't as quick as these guys, but we did the best job with the package we had.The Red Bulls are just so fast. I knew I wouldn't be able to outpace them. I tried hard in the first few laps, I was flat out, but he just kept on creeping away.”
