Phelps and Brunson Meet
The 2008 Summer Olympics recently came to an end in Beijing last month. One of the stars to walk away from the games a household name is United States swimmer Michael Phelps. This stellar individual earned a history making eight gold medals during the swimming competition portion of the Summer Olympic Games. At the time, no one expected this star athlete to become part of a poker playing conversation.
This is where a man who is synonymous with setting a few records in the poker world walks into the picture. Doyle Brunson holds the distinct honor of being a ten time World Series of Poker Champion. He has effectively earned the gold medal of poker playing ten times. As a legendary poker playing great, Mr. Brunson writes a daily blog for other poker playing enthusiasts. Recently the world of poker and swimming came together in an unexpected way. Paths of Phelps and Brunson crossed in the fast-paced, animated city that is Las Vegas. The two iconic members of their individual sports sat down for dinner with Brunson’s son Todd who is following in dad’s footsteps by playing professional poker as well.
Brunson was in town with his son and other members of the poker community such as Hoyt Corkins and Jennifer Harman when he received an unexpected call from Michael Phelps’ agent. This individual contacted Brunson and mentioned that Phelps and a few friends were enjoying a stay at the Palms Hotel. He further went on to say that Phelps is a poker enthusiast and wanted to meet Brunson. A special request was made for Brunson’s books �Super System One’ and’ Super System Two’ and he obliged.
The pair met for dinner at Nine Steakhouse located in the Palms Hotel lobby. Over dinner Michael and friends were full of poker related questions for the World Series of Poker champion. Each question was met with enthusiasm. Phelps stated that the three things he wanted to do in life are eat, swim and play poker. As dinner came to an end, an invitation was extended to Michael’s agent to join Brunson at the Real Deal Poker Event being held at the Venetian in October.
At this event there will be at least ten poker playing professionals mixed in with a host of celebrities and sports figures. All will come together in one spectacular star studded event where good times and great poker action are sure to be found.
