Tennis Sports Betting Surpasses Imagination

Last updated: 06/07/2008 13:02

Andy Murray’s quarter final showdown with Rafael Nadal surpassed the imagination of all online sports betting companies.  No one was prepared for the amount of bets that would be placed on the match.  According to online sites В£8 million was wagered on the match before the game began.

This particular game even surpasses the land bets that have been made in the past.  The bets were mostly for Nadal all though many hoped for an upset with Murray in the game.  The largest single bet was В£32,000 for Nadal with the biggest bet for Murray at В£1,000.

A previous record of В£5 million being bet on a tennis match existed a couple of years ago, but even that has been broken.

Many of the online sports betting places are amazed at the amount of revenue they pulled from these bets.  The sports betting industry has been growing in the last few years with the addition of online gambling in the UK.  Consumers have found a second vocation in betting on sports around the world and there are numerous consumers who are very successful.

Tennis has had a lot of play in the media lately regarding sports betting with the recent accusations of fixed matches and of course last week with the two Williams sisters facing each other in a head to head match at Wimbledon вЂ" Venus finally beat her sister Serena to take the trophy.

It seems the sports betting industry is going to continue to grow as these high profile matches keeping taking place.  Nadal and Murray are just the beginning of where the industry can head in the next few years as long as things like fixed matches are corrected and punished.

Tennis is not the only area of the industry to see huge increases from bettors.  In fact MLB, NFL, Football, Rugby, and the Olympics are all getting play this year for top matches.  Some bets are being placed as soon as the pairings are released, while others are waiting to see what announcements will take place next.

The online sports betting world makes betting convenient although perhaps too convenient, according to some of the more outspoken media heads.  Several governments are worried about the addiction of such convenience, but that doesn’t seem to be slowing down the bets being placed through online companies.
