Don't Give Birth Until England Win World Cup
An expectant mother is under strict orders not to deliver her baby until July 9 2006, so that her husband can win a unique bet which will provide them with a £3000 windfall.
For 32 year old Stuart Harvey, a warehouse manager from Burgess Hill in West Sussex, has gambled £20 with William Hill that his wife, Diana, will give birth to their first child on July 9, 2006 - and that England will win the World Cup on the same day. William Hill gave him odds of 150/1 about the two events happening on the same day and spokesman Graham Sharpe commented, "This bet definitely has the qualifications to become the daddy of all World Cup bets!"
"We are expecting a deluge of wacky World Cup wagers as the tournament moves closer to kick-off", said Sharpe, who has also just accepted a bet from Newcastle car company director, David Wilson, 32, that his three month old baby girl Lydia will grow up to play for the men's national side, which could win him £250,000 for his stake of £5 at odds of 50,000/1 - although she is more likely to land his £20 bet at odds of 1000/1 that she plays for the women's side.
Meanwhile, other England fans for whom just betting on England to win the World Cup (7/1) is not enough, are staking wagers with William Hill on what haircut David Beckham will sport in England's opening game - he's 3/1 favourite to turn up with a close crop or shaved head; 4/1 to reintroduce the Alice Band style; 5/1 to be spikey and 6/1 to be Mulleted - whether Wayne Rooney will play any part in the tournament - 1/5 that he will; 10/3 that he won't; and whether teenage sensation Theo Walcott will pass the driving test he has postponed until after the World Cup - it is 11/10 that he does, 4/6 that he doesn't.
William Hill have opened a book on which of the many World Cup pop singles will hit the highest spot in the charts on or before World Cup Final day and make the Tonedef All Stars Even money favourites with 'Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Jurgen Klinsman?' while the official FA song, 'World At Your Feet' by Embrace is 7/4 second favourite, ahead of Talksport's 'We're England' at 9/2 and Il Divo's 8/1 chance 'Time Of Our Lives'.
