Federer Into Round Three Of Australian Open
Roger Federer continued his serene progress at the Australian Open with a thumping win over Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman in round two on Wednesday.
With the temperature less extreme than the previous day, the world number one took advantage with a quick 6-2 6-3 6-2 victory on Rod Laver Arena.
Federer will meet 25th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the last 32.
"I think I was pretty much in control - I knew if I kept my serve going it would be tough for Jonas," he said. "It was a good match from my side. I knew if it ever got close he has the experience. You know you're in for a fight if it gets tough."
Sixth seed Andy Roddick showed he is close to his best form as he saw off a spirited Marc Gicquel in straight sets.
The American edged the big-serving encounter with the only two breaks, winning 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 and goes on to meet 2005 winner Marat Safin or Israeli Dudi Sela.
Fourteenth seed Novak Djokovic - a potential fourth-round opponent for Fededer - reached round three with a comprehensive 6-2 7-5 6-1 win over Feliciano Lopez.
The 19-year-old Serb is the highest ranked teenager in the world at number 15 and showed that class against Lopez.
Djokovic, who won the Adelaide warm-up event, overcame a slight wobble in the second set to win in just over two hours.
"I'm feeling really comfortable on the court and playing with a lot of confidence and determination," he said. "In the second set I struggled a little bit but I managed to come through in the end."
He will next play Danai Udomchoke of Thailand, who was highly impressive in a 7-6 (7-0) 7-5 4-6 6-1 win over 24th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero.
