Hawk Now Odds On For Second Derby Title

Last updated: 13/03/2008 17:01

Westmead Hawk produced another breath taking performance at Wimbledon in the quarter finals of the William Hill Greyhound Derby on Tuesday night.

Clocking 28.58 he nailed Ballymac Pires close home, with Blue Majestic taking the third qualifying space and Scottish Derby hero Fear Me on his way home after finishing fourth.

Westmead Hawk has certainly proved a main attraction for the crowd at a packed Wimbledon Stadium, the buzz before the final quarter was electric and if the cheer gets bigger for 'The Hawk' on semi's night it will be rivaling the famous 'Derby roar' as the traps open for the final!

Clash Darby provided the biggest shock in the first quarter final, trapping brilliantly and leading the field the whole way round to score a 25/1 victory and bagging his place in the semi final. Bubbly Classic clocked the best time of the competition so far (28.52) in winning the second quarter final while Brian Clemensons other remaining runner Brookvill Genius also qualified in third as Ice and Lemon split the pair.

The third quarter final saw the best finish of the night with Nick Savva on the winners podium again as Westmead Joe held on from a late challenge by Amarillo Slim and Mineola Farloe back in third.

Three of last years finalists are through to the semi final stage, with Westmead Hawk, Mineola Farloe and Blue Majestic all bidding to make the final of the worlds greatest greyhound race yet again.

The first semi final is a particularly hot heat with Bubbly Classic, Westmead Joe and Amarillo Slim all holding live chances of making the final. Hills make Amarillo Slim the 13-8 favourite for the heat. 'The Hawk' dominates the betting for the second semi as the 4-6 favourite with Ballymac Pries and Mineola Farloe the two likely to qualify in behind him.
