Ryder Cup Punters Bet Third Of Million

Last updated: 13/03/2008 16:42

A William Hill customer from Tyne & Wear who staked £247,000 on the USA to win the Ryder Cup has upped his wager to £347,000 and now stands to collect £753,400 if Tiger Woods' troops win the competition.

"This is now one of the most astonishing bets we have ever taken on any sporting contest" said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "I know that the man concerned - a telephone betting client who is in his mid thirties - is a great Phil Mickelson fan, judging by previous bets he has placed, but outside of horse racing and the World Cup we have rarely seen a bet of this nature staked."
