Turin Skiing Doping Probe Moves Forward

Last updated: 13/03/2008 17:07

The International Olympic Committee is set to move forward with its probe into doping by Austrian skiers and coaches at last year's Winter Games in Turin.

The IOC has finally received a report from Italian authorities on the case that marred the Olympics last February.

The committee's disciplinary commission will now analyse the report before calling individuals for a hearing.

"This report is an important element of the IOC's inquiry," said an IOC statement on Tuesday. "Its receipt will now enable the IOC Disciplinary Commission to move ahead with its work."

The presence of banned Austria coach Walter Mayer at athletes' living quarters at the Games prompted Italian police to carry out raids on the Austrian cross-country skiing and biathlon teams.

Ten Austrian athletes were tested for possible signs of doping but were found to be clean, while Mayer fled the scene before crashing his car across the border in Austria.

He later filed legal action against IOC president Jacques Rogge and World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) chief Dick Pound for defamation after being cleared of any wrong doing by the Austrian ski federation.
