Sports Betting For Men Only?

Last updated: 13/03/2008 17:46

It seems that sports betting sites are only interested in attracting male customers. If so, what can be done to change this?

The Online Casino industry is at an unprecedented peak. More and more online casino and sports betting sites are opening up all the time, and billions of people world wide are showing an increased interest in this form of entertainment. Online sports betting is a newer form of gambling, but is still very firmly placed in the market. One problem with the sports gambling market is that it is generally only considered a man’s market. In order to sharply increase their market share the sports gambling industry can do plenty to change this image.

For women wishing to participate in the sports betting industry, they are faced with a number of hurdles. The first hurdle is the actual site itself: it is all-male, no two ways about it. As soon as a woman opens a sports betting site they are confronted with half-naked women selling the wares. These women are strategically placed trying to encourage (presumably) the men to click on this tab or to open this window in order to get a prize / bonus / further information. Most women who are out to place a bet on a sports match are not going to be too excited about bikini-clad women flashing across the screen.

Another hurdle is the font and presentation of the sites. Most of the sports betting sites are simply boring – blue and red and white fonts, pictures of bulls or dogs symbolising different sports teams and players. There is nothing attractive or remotely feminine about these sites. OK, we are not asking for roses and petals, but a bit of balance would be good!

If the sports betting industry wishes to open itself up to around another FIFTY percent of the world’s population, then it has some work to do. The first step would be to equalize the presence of semi-naked bodies on their sites – if they are going to insist on having beautiful women in bikinis, then what is wrong with having hunky males in boxers (or less) encouraging betting on women’s sports? Another option would be for the sites to link up with online casinos that have a high female presence. If a woman has come to play poker but sees an attractive link to a sports betting site, then she might be tempted to click further.

The sports betting industry is still relatively new in the online gambling world. If they wish to succeed and develop an even stronger presence on the internet, then cutting out almost half of their potential client base.
