Manchester United Reach Champions League Quarter-Final
Premiership leaders Manchester United secured their Champions League quarter-final place after a 1-0 win over Lille at Old Trafford to go through 2-0 on aggregate.
Henrik Larsson grabbed the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute in what was a fitting send-off to his final game for United at the Theatre of Dreams before his return to Helsingborgs.
United started strongly with Wayne Rooney having an effort blocked and John O'Shea heading the resulting corner against the Lille crossbar.
However, the visitors signalled their intent in the 22nd minute when Jean Makoun flicked a header straight at Edwin van de Sar from close range.
Carrick then whistled an effort wide from distance but the French outfit were edging their way into the game as United struggled to find their normal fluency.
Lille came out of the traps quickly at the start of the second period, with Kader Keita twice testing Van der Sar from way out and Peter Odemwingie heading against a post after sloopy United defending.
But it was the home side who finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Cristiano Ronaldo's brilliant run and cross down the left was powerfully headed home by Larsson.
