Brave Inca showed the battling qualities that helped him land last year's Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle to land the Bewleys Hotels December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown.
Colm Murphy's eight year old, partnered by Ruby Walsh for the first time, travelled well throughout the race and found more when it mattered to hold off the challenge of Iktitaf who looked all over the winner turning for home.
William Hill trimmed Brave Inca to 9-2 from 5 for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle and pushed Iktitaf out to 10-1 from 6.
Ben Clarke of William Hill added: "Brave Inca once again battled well and his performance has to be respected but we still believe that he will have to step up in order to successfully defend his Champion Hurdle Crown."
