Move to Legalize Online Poker

Last updated: 19/11/2008 14:00

THERE is a group formulating around the popular online card game of poker. At the heart of this group is the belief that there is a distinct difference between online poker and online gambling. It is this belief and the passionate dedication of group members that is going to make a push to legalize online poker.

Part of the thought process for this group is that online poker is more a game of strategy than a game of chance. From a certain perspective this thought holds true. Game analysis is a constant factor in any poker game and especially in an online poker game. Players must be aware of what is taking place at the gaming table. In addition to this, players must also be aware of the cards they are currently holding and how the new dealt cards affect that hand.

When looked at from this perspective, online poker can be viewed as a game of strategy. The common belief is that many members of lawmakers already understand that poker is a game of strategy as opposed to a game of chance.

It is easy to distinguish that online slot machine games and other assorted virtual casino games contain an element of chance. Regardless of how aware a player is when engaged in a slot machine or other casino game, that focus can not chance the outcome of the game. Poker is the direct opposite. Players are in control of their hands and the decisions made based on those hands.

At the head of the movement to legalize online poker play is Chairman and CEO of Harrah’s, Gary Loveman. He believes that presenting online poker as a game of strategy as opposed to a game of chance will help further the cause.

On its own, Harrah’s holds a vested interest in having online poker legalized. Harrah’s holds the licensing rights to the biggest poker game in the gambling industry. That is of course the World Series of Poker brand name. In the event that online poker is legalized, the profits available from the game will attract a great deal more of interested players. These are players who may currently be staying away from the game due to the illegal aspect of the game.

Recent moves by the US Treasury Department are calling for stringent guideline implementations of the UIGEA. Now is the perfect time for interested groups to make moves petitioning to make online poker legalized.
