Play like a Poker Professional

Poker is one of the most fast-paced, action packed card games played in the gambling circuit. It is glamorized with celebrities and sports figures taking a place at the table to ante up with the biggest and the best poker playing professionals in the industry.

All the glitz and glamour of the game in recent years has prompted many regular poker players to think of the possibility of turning a hobby into a professional career. With a little practice and time dedication, it is possible to quit a day job and start a new career as a professional poker player. There are a few steps that need to be taken in order to turn a hobby in to a money making opportunity.

One of the first steps towards becoming a professional poker player is the issue of time. Any poker playing professional seen seated at a gaming table has logged no less than 500 hours of play on the amateur circuit. This includes online and local tournament play. It is extremely important to keep track of the number of hours played to measure progress as the transition is made.

Poker players often look for the games that will result in the highest money per hour of playing the game. In order to get to this point, casual poker players must know what particular poker game is their personal best. This can include Texas Hold ‘em; 5 card stud or Caribbean poker. Whatever it is make sure to be the best of the best before entering the world of professional play.

Another key to becoming and staying a professional poker player is discipline. When in business for someone else, there is a set of rules and standards to follow that is devised by the boss. For a professional poker player making a living on the game that set of rules and standards comes from the player. There is no outside guiding authority to keep a player on the right track.

Save approximately six months worth of living expenses before quitting a regular job to become a professional poker player. Poker is a game of luck. When luck is good, the money will be flowing in. When luck is bad, there will be the need for a nest egg to fall back on until the luck swings back in a positive direction.

Above and beyond everything else, try to maintain an element of fun into the game. Yes, being a professional poker player is a full time job. However, it will pay to hold on to that glimmer of excitement and adventure that brought the move from casual backyard poker player to center stage tournament event professional poker player.
