Tiger Woods Marriage to Elin Nordegren Ends in Divorce
It has been reported that the former couple intend on sharing the parenting of their two young children, 3-year-old daughter, Sam, and 19-month-old son, Charlie.
News of the divorce comes only nine months after rumours and subsequent evidence of Tiger’s infidelity became public.
The incident sparking the media free for all was a highly publicised car accident which took place outside the couple’s marital home. It is widely believed that Nordegren had driven Woods from the home and then taken to his vehicle with a golf club.
News of Woods’ many affairs became public knowledge in the wake of this incident. US media are reporting Ms. Nordegren will receive an approximate settlement amount of £64.4m, which equates to around $100 million US dollars. The settlement is believed to almost certainly contain a strict secrecy clause.
The divorce was made final by a Florida Bay County judge and both parties attended the hearing.
As a result of his serial infidelity becoming public, Woods - the richest athlete in the world - lost several major sponsors including global brands AT&T and Gatorade.
Even though Woods went on to publicly apologise for his infidelity, openly admitting he had been unfaithful to wife Elin numerous times, the family-man-gone-astray stigma is proving hard to shift.
A statement released by the former couple’s legal teams stated the following:
"While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us"
"Once we came to the decision that our marriage was at an end, the primary focus of our amicable discussions has been to ensure their future well-being. The weeks and months ahead will not be easy for them."
