Sheffield United Pushes Ahead With Hotel Plan

Last updated: 13/03/2008 16:31

Sheffield United is pressing ahead with the development of a 10-storey hotel at its stadium, despite uncertainty about plans for a 'super casino'.

The club has submitted an application for the 150-bedroom hotel and new corner stand at Bramall Lane.

The development is part of the club's vision to revamp the stadium and surrounding Sharrow area.

Linked plans for the "Sheffield Sands" entertainment complex will depend on the government, a spokesman said.

The location of the UK's only regional super-casino will be decided by an independent panel. The current favourite for the site appears to be Blackpool.

Plans for the hotel complex include 150 bedrooms, two restaurants, bars and gym facilities. The new stand will boost stadium capacity by 2,100 and include facilities for disabled fans.

Sheffield City Council's planning committee are expected to discuss the application in the Autumn.

Sheffield United finance director Mark Fenoughty said: "This hotel scheme will provide a boost to the club's long-term financial viability and the Sheffield city region's hotel offering will be enhanced by a modern and contemporary four-star venue."

The development is expected to bring long-term opportunities in the Sharrow area.
