Actress Reese Witherspoon has won best actress for her role as June Carter Cash in Walk The Line.

The 29-year-old star, the favourite for the award, thanked her co-star Joaquin Phoenix: "I feel so lucky to have gone on this journey with you."

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman said he was "overwhelmed" after winning best actor for his role as author Truman Capote in eponymous biopic.

Cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain is tipped to take the night's top awards.

King Kong and Memoirs of a Geisha both have three wins so far in technical categories.
