French President marries in secret

Last updated: 13/03/2008 16:33

Barely two months since he announced his divorce from wife Cecilia, rumours are circulating that French President Nicholas Sarkozy has apparently married his girlfriend Carla Bruni.

The secret ceremony is at odds with what has been a very public affair. Sarkozy proudly admitted in a press conference recently that the relationship was indeed serious, but that no wedding date had been set.

French public opinion is divided over the relationship, with many finding this new openness by their leader refreshing, after decades of hushed scandals and adulterous presidents. However, many critics find this public display of affection by their head of state somewhat distasteful, aside from the fact that his affair has been dominating the headlines, when there are surely more important matters at stake. Far from shying from the cameras, Sarkozy has appeared to be courting media attention in his personal life.

Sarkozys beautiful new wife, who formerly dated Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, adds some street cred to his image. Former supermodel Bruni has a six year old son from a previous relationship. This would be the Presidents third marriage.

There has been no official comment on the marriage and it remains uncertain whether the ceremony did in fact take place. The world will have to wait for the President, nicknamed Bling bling, to break the suspense when it suits him.
