Sonny and Cher's flagging career was revived by Las Vegas - after playing supper clubs and nightclubs in the city, opening for people like Pat Boone, the cut a live album in one night in Las Vegas and it went gold.
Even after their partnership broke up and their marriage failed, Cher still played Las Vegas. A performance at the Mirage in the early 1990s highlighted her good - humoured vanity.
After ascending to the stage in a gown that appeared to have been designed by the Marquis de Sade, Cher was greeted to a standing ovation. Her response "Oh, come on, you're not really that excited!"
