France makes controversial move to legalize online gaming
A new French law to allow gamblers to voluntarily exclude themselves from online and land based casinos has inspired debate across the world.
The legality of gambling in France made headlines yet again this week following months of heavy speculation. A controversial decision by the French government to legalize online gaming has resulted in a series of peculiar measures designed to curb gaming activity. From June 14 onwards, self proclaimed gambling addicts can volunteer to be excluded from online casinos in an effort to ensure their own protection. The new regulations will permit players to ban themselves from online and land based gaming services for a period of three years so that they do not continue their irresponsible behaviour.
Players wishing to be barred from casinos must follow a simple procedure. Gamblers are required to write to the French Ministry of the Interior to formally request the ban and must agree fully to its terms. The ban cannot be reversed and ensures that players must wait the full three year time period before seeking readmittance.
William Hill, meanwhile, has surprised many members of the gaming community after choosing to opt out of online gaming in France. Experts remain sceptical about the effectiveness of the scheme which may see gamblers resorting to former behaviour once the ban has elapsed. It is clear that such a system will continue to inspire debate as discussions concerning the legality of online gaming continue to occupy both Europe and the US at large.
