Impressive investor days from Sportingbet and Playtech
Sportingbet was the first to arrive and they were full of celebrities. The ex Liverpool and Scotland international football player Alan Hansen was the star of their show.
Playtech were the next to show up and whilst they didn’t have any celebrities on show at the investor day, they made up for it was an excellent demonstration of the technology behind their business.
The question is though, why these two days after months of quiet. Sportingbet is currently putting large amounts of money into infrastructure, particularly technology and the investor day was a display of this. Playtech has been making efforts recently to improve their relations with investors and also increase their understanding of the business.
Playtech’s event was well attended and their presentations looked like they were perfectly timed. In recent times the visibility of earnings within the gaming sector has gone down, this is because of uncertainty surrounding newly regulating markets, structural issues in poker, taxation, the World Cup, volatile currencies and the state of the financial markets in general. By showing the strength of their businesses they are hoping that investors will focus on long-term potential rather than the short term uncertainties.
However, investors will probably take both long and short term into consideration, this means that over the next few months share prices are likely to fluctuate and possibly longer. This is an important time in the online gaming market and investors will be being careful about who they choose to back.
