What is the future of online gambling under Obama?
For years now Barak Obama has been considered innovative and modern. During his election campaign he certainly displayed his modernity, there were huge virtual billboards advertising his campaign being displayed in online casinos across America. The adverts did not attract favourable criticism, but they did at least make people pay attention.
If you visit the Obama website, www.change.gov, you can read about the changes he and his team of advisors would like to see across both America and the rest of the world. One of his promises is to protect the internet from censorship and also government interference. Perhaps this can be seen as a positive sign for the future of online gambling in America and changes to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
According to people on the inside, Obama has his own ideas about how the internet should be regulated; apparently he wishes to "ensure the full and free exchange of ideas through an open internet and diverse media outlets.” It is certainly safe to say that a large reason for the success of the internet is its openness.
However, we must not forget that Obama did vote against the legalisation of dockside gambling riverboats and who said that the "moral and social cost of gambling is devastating". Whenever asked about his position on online gambling he has so far been very non-committal and vague about where he stands.
Some people have the opinion that a Democrat government will lead to the end of the UIGEA or at the least a review of it, especially since most of the anti-UIGEA laws originate in the democrats. What it means is that this is definitely an issue that should be closely watched.
