Georgia-born Katie Melua concerned for family
Katie Melua is always cited as an Irish star but she was born in Georgia. At the time of her birth, Georgia was a part of the Soviet Republic. When she was eight years old the family made the decision to leave the Soviet Republic and settled in Ireland. Little did they know their daughter would become the top selling female singer in the United Kingdom. Twenty three year old Katie has a unique singing voice that captured the imagination of listeners from the beginning. Her wistful songs and lyrics all have a depth that proved exactly what her new fans wanted. They were all a bit tired of having a choice between the staged performances of boy and girl bands. You only have to think of the Spice Girls to get the picture.
The singing sensation’s mum and 15 year old brother are at present in Georgia visiting the rest of the family. Katie says she is ‘worried’ about her family but does not want to be ‘over dramatic’ about the situation. She was speaking to them on the phone and Katie said her uncle may be requested to join the army. The star explained her family is providing a ‘realistic picture’ of the situation in Georgia. Katie and her immediate family left the region to escape the civil war. They found themselves in the then troubled Belfast. So Katie says she is accustomed to being in countries where there is ‘war’. Her family is unharmed but for how long they do not know.
