WGA on Strike, Golden Globes Chucked

Writers scrap the formal procedure of this year’s Golden Globes ceremony over royalty issues.

As reported by the organizers, the Golden Globes ceremony which is held every year, will be replaced by a news conference that will announce the winners and the recipients of this globally renowned and most prestigious award function.

The Golden Globes Award ceremony is held every year to honor the participants of American television and motion pictures for their contribution to the industry, the ceremony coming only second to the Oscars in respect and honor. However, this year the world will await the ceremony, which will proceed in the form of just an announcement as to the recipients of the awards, with the huge population of aspiring fans all around the globe awaiting a glimpse of their favorite stars face to face or in the cozy comfort of the small screen.

The president of the Golden Globes ceremony, and head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Jorge Camara, said, "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars."

Consequently, the major TV networks in America have announced not to air the ceremony without the Hollywood actors being there. The conference, instead, creeps in to replace the ceremony and the hour-long news conference will be aired at 1800 hours local time (i.e. 0200 hours GMT) in Beverley Hills, next Sunday.

The scrapping of the ceremony by Hollywood actors is a show of “solidarity and support” towards the WGA (Writers’ Guild of America), who have been striking since early November last year over disputes regarding royalty payments. The Hollywood actors join the movement and the Screen Actors’ Guild to officially announce their boycott of the ceremony in order to demonstrate support and solidarity to their creative cousins. Alan Rosenberg, the union president of the Screen Actors’ Guild has announced that there was "unanimous agreement" upon not crossing the picket lines as set by the WGA.

"After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks,” he adds, “there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA (Writers' Guild of America) picket lines".

The major dispute that characterizes the strike is over royalties that the participants of the WGA are to receive for their material being published online or in the form of DVD. Their discontent has started making its presence felt over the last two months. The movement is characterized by a "crucial struggle that will protect our income and intellectual property rights for generations to come", as commented by the WGA reports to the media.

However, the movement has spread like wild fire and is no longer limited to the naïve boycott of an awaited ceremony. The movement is now instrumental in the almost closing down of the production and creation of drama shows and TV comedies in America!
