Best Actress Marion Cotillard in hot water over 9/11 comments
Marion Cotillard, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress at this year’s recent Academy Awards, is back in the news, for all the wrong reasons.
Comments made over a year ago in an interview have been taken out of context, to the extent that some reports are now demonizing the sweet-natured French actress.
Headlines suggest that Cotillard does not consider the September 11 tragedy as a terrorist attack, instead suggesting that the owners of the towers orchestrated the event.
This view has been perceived as anti-American to many, and could harm her up and coming career.
However, a closer look at the interview shows Cotillard discussing conspiracy theories in general. She said that she doesn’t just accept the official version in many situations, and is fascinated by conspiracy theories that she has read about on the net.
She did question the truth behind the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks, and referred to footage she had seen of other towers that had been hit by airplanes, saying in no other case had they collapsed, as they did in New York. She commented on a conspiracy theory which claims that the tower owners destroyed the buildings since it was cheaper than rewiring them.
She also questioned whether man ever really made it to the moon. These type of theories are fairly popular and are debated by thousands of people round the world. Many people still talk of conspiracy theories in the cases of JFK, Marilyn Monroe and more recently Princess Diana.
It’s amazing how quickly things change in Hollywood. Last week, Marion Cotillard was the film world’s darling, leaping to fame as she won the Oscar for her performance in La Vie en Rose, the Edith Piaf biopic.
Just days later, there is talk of her faux pas costing her her career. Let’s just hope that Hollywood doesn’t turn these comments, which didn’t raise an eyebrow when they were made, into a melodrama.
