Take That Tipped For Brits Prize

Last updated: 13/03/2008 16:52

Reformed boy band Take That have been named favourites to win the best single prize at this week's Brit awards.

Their comeback song, Patience, has odds of 1/2 at bookmaker Ladbrokes, pushing Snow Patrol into second place.

Other acts in the running include Will Young, The Feeling, and Razorlight - with the winner to be decided by public vote during Wednesday's live show.

Amy Winehouse, The Killers and Oasis are among acts scheduled to perform at the event, at Earls Court in London.

The five acts in the best single category made the final cut after an initial shortlist of 11 singles was whittled down by commercial radio listeners.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said Take That were likely to take home the prize because of their "solid fanbase".

"They're only up for one award," he added, "which means their votes will be concentrated in one category".

Hosted by comedian Russell Brand, this year's Brits show will be broadcast live for the first time since the shambolic 1989 ceremony fronted by Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood.

Lily Allen, Muse, Gnarls Barkley and Snow Patrol lead the nominations, with three appearances on the shortlist.

London-based pop singer Allen was originally up for four awards, but has since been eliminated from the best single category.

She is still in competition for best British female solo artist, best breakthrough act, and best album.

Arctic Monkeys, Amy Winehouse, Muse and Snow Patrol also compete for the album prize.

Oasis will pick up an award for outstanding contribution to music, joining the likes of the Bee Gees, Paul Weller and the Spice Girls in the Brits hall of fame.
