Sheffield Casino Debate Rages
Sheffield's super casino debate is heating up after casino operator Sun International, which is hoping to open a £200 million casino and entertainment complex in the city's Lower Don Valley, released a survey of 500 city centre residents that showed 66 per cent were positive or neutral towards gambling, with 33 per cent against.
The study also stated that people were more concerned about drug and alcohol abuse, anti-social behaviour, crime and health.
UK Development Director of Sun International, Neil Murphy, said: "This latest research confirms that with the right scheme and the right operator, a regional casino will bring substantial and sustainable regeneration."
These findings prompted anti-casino campaigners to say that a new casino complex would harm the local economy. "These places don't create new money," said CASE organiser and Blackpool councillor Steven Bate, "they suck money out of local economies."
