Kenya violence continues as political crisis leaves thousands homeless

Last updated: 13/03/2008 16:33

Last month’s disputed elections have left Kenya in turmoil, with violence erupting, leaving 360 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless, after being forced to flee their homes.

President Kibaki was re-elected against opposition leader Raila Odinga, amid claims of a corrupt election. Odinga’s supporters took to the streets in protest in their thousands. The riots have largely broken out between rival tribes, with Odinga’s Luo supporters fighting against Kibaki’s mostly Kikuyu faithful.

The situation has got so bad that supplies of food and drinking water are running low, and aid agencies are doing all they can to keep things under control. Temporary camps have been established to house those who fled from their homes amid the unrest. Some Kenyans have fled to neighbouring Uganda to escape the bloodshed.

Usually one of the most stable countries in the region, this latest spate of violence in Kenya is very worrying. Holidaymakers have also been caught up in the chaos and are now unable to leave. This may well harm Kenya’s image as a tourist destination

International condemnation has poured in on the two leaders, urging them to seek an immediate solution.
