Coventry Shocked By Failed Casino Bid
Backers of Coventry's failed bid for a super casino are demanding answers on why they were unsuccessful.
No Midlands bids were included in the shortlist for a Las Vegas-style development.
A casino at the city's Ricoh Arena is being built under existing legislation and will open next year.
"This news comes as a major shock and disappointment to those involved in the Coventry project," said city council leader Ken Taylor. "We will be seeking early and comprehensive clarification from the advisory panel on the detailed reasons behind their decision, particularly given recent job losses in our area."
The council had been working with American firm Isle of Capri on the bid for the Rowleys Green site next to the city's new football stadium.
Mr Taylor added: "In contrast to very many of the other proposals for a regional casino pilot that appeared to contain little detailed data or information, Coventry's submission was based on an extensive independent assessment of our proposals. We remain absolutely convinced that Coventry must be on the list and will be looking into this decision further with the advisory panel as a matter of urgency."
It follows the disappointment of neighbouring Solihull, where a similar bid for a casino at the NEC - 10 miles from Coventry - was also turned down.
