A brief history of Online
Casino Software
The rise in demand for online casinos and the games they
have to offer proves that it is an ever-growing online business. Growth means
involvement of a lot of money in addition to the staggering amounts that the
online casinos already handle as of today. Growth also emphasises the need for
improved online security. More potential attacks will occur as hackers realise
the vast amounts of money that flow through an online casino each and every day.
This article probes a brief history of online casino software and its evolution
into what it is today.
When online casinos were introduced, they offered downloadable
software which was of very low quality and took about three to four hours to
download (of course with dial up speeds also being low). These online casino
software packages also offered a very limited choice in gaming, in addition to
poor graphics and sound. Another creed the no-download software - were not much
better. Later, the online casino download software was divided into two major
parts a small installation package and an add-on module depending on the game
you chose to play. This reduced the size of software by a considerable amount. It
also enabled quicker downloads (plus internet connections got better) and the
choice of games offered was wider, better and more realistic.
However, during these times, the increase in demand forced
online casinos to look forward and develop a more sophisticated and complete software
package. So much so that the research became part of the competition and the
quality of software provided became the unique selling point for many online
casinos. This surge in competition brought on new investors in the quest for
the perfect online casino software based on achieving two major goals:
a)
Improving and developing
better downloadable casino software
b)
Creation of better and more
complete no-download GUI for online casinos.
The downloadable software goal was firmly achieved with
marked increase in download speeds, games suites, graphics and the overall
gaming experience. This in turn brought in more and more online casino players.
While all this happened, the no-download software remained dormant mainly due
to internet connection speeds.
Even until recently, many ISPs (internet service
providers) did not have enough resources to provide for the instant play online
casino software. Quick loading of the software and communication with online
casino servers through secure protocols was unheard of in many countries. The
result was that the online casinos took too much time to load, forcing
potential players away and into the hands of other online leisure activities.
While things have looked up since then, the no-download software option has not
really taken off due to the long memories of these interested gamblers.
Today, with a stark change in the internet connection
scenario, the advent of DSL and broadband in addition to faster hardware and robust
operating systems has enabled online casino enthusiasts to load their games
faster and has made gambling at an online casino an generally thrilling
experience. While the online casinos for their part have realised that a player
is not limited to a single PC, the average play time has increased, so have the
stakes and the winnings. The future will only usher in better and better game
suites and play environments.
