Millionaire gambling addict sues Australian casino
Can you sue a casino for making you lose money?
Australian millionaire Harry Kakavas is attempting to do just that. He is taking Crown Casino to court, accusing them of deliberately enticing him back to their casino when he was trying to stay away.
Kavakas admits that he is addicted to gambling, and so in attempt to solve the problem, he barred himself from Crown Casino. However, Crown management had other ideas, reluctant to lose one of their biggest customers.
According to Kavakas, casino staff plied him with gifts, flew him to their casino in a private jet on numerous occasions and gave him thousands of dollars in cash to get him started each time. He claims the casino mounted a targeted plan to draw a known addict back to his vice.
He went on to lose $30 million over a 14 month period, mainly playing baccarat.
He is now suing Crown for exactly that amount, plus damages. The Supreme Court ruled that Kavakas does have a case and so the Adelaide-based casino must put up a defence.
Is Kavakas really a victim of the casino, or is this another case of a high roller trying to cover his losses? Only time, and justice will tell.
