Brit wins World Pool Championship
A Blackpool snooker player defied 150-1 odds to win the World Pool Championships this week in the Philippines. Daryl Peach, a former professional snooker player, beat local favourite Roberto Gomez 17-15, becoming the first Brit to win the title.
The match took place in Manilas Araneta Coliseum, the stadium made famous by the Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier Thrilla in Manila fight in 1975. The 3000 strong crowd were mostly Filipino, making it a tough audience for Daryl.
Peach had a dramatic win in the quarter-finals over Francisco Bustamente when the referee contested a shot. Play was stopped for 20 minutes as the shot was analyzed by video replay, and the crowd went crazy, booing the British player when he went on to win.
35 year old Peach takes home $100,000 and a silver trophy.
