Hamilton loses out on the title F1 world championship
Rookie Lewis Hamilton has stunned the racing world by climbing to second place in the world championship at the end of his first year of Formula One racing.
For a brief moment it seemed that, due to a technicality, Hamilton might be the outright championship winner.
The Brazilian grand prix ended in doubt as the Williams and BMW Sauber teams, in 4th, 5th and 6th places, were investigated for fuel irregularities. If the suspected teams had been found in breach of the rules, Hamilton would have gone from 7th to 4th place, earning him enough points to beat Raikkonen to first place for the title.
However, several tense hours later, it was revealed that no disqualification was to be made, and Hamiltons hopes were dashed.
Despite a less than perfect performance in the final race, including a gearbox failure that lost him vital seconds, his seventh place was enough to rank him second in the drivers championship, at the end of what has been a fantastic season for the young driver.
Although his achievement was somewhat clouded by the Brazil fiasco, 22 year-old Lewis is not too disappointed by his almost win. The new British sporting hero is rightly proud that he is already ranked second in the world and says hell be back next year to fight for the title.
