Cricket - Vaughan A Doubt After New SetbackCricket - Vaughan A Doubt After New Setback

Michael Vaughan is doubtful for England's Commonwealth Bank Series clash against New Zealand on Tuesday after aggravating his hamstring injury.

He hurt his left leg in last week's win over the Kiwis in Hobart but had hoped to be fit to face them again in Perth.

The batsman tweaked his hamstring again in training at the weekend, however, and fears he may not be fit in time.

Vaughan said: "We'll have to monitor it but to play on Tuesday I have to play a full part in the next practice."

The 32-year-old revealed this latest injury setback came as he was attempting to avoid a short delivery from pace bowler Sajid Mahmood at England's practice base at Fletcher Oval, the home of Perth Cricket Club.

"I just felt a little bit of a twinge when I ducked a ball," he said. "And now we'll just have to see how I get through a full net and fielding session. Every day we have tried to push it - there are always little obstacles you have to try to get over. I guess the odd twinges might be something I have to live with."

Whoever plays on Tuesday, Vaughan says a victory and morale-boosting finish to the series is essential.

The tourists were hammered by Australia in Adelaide on Friday, when they were bowled out for only 110.

That came after the Kiwis skittled them for 120 in their previous game at the same venue.

"In eight years in the England team, that was as low as I have ever seen players feel," he said of the nine-wicket thrashing by the Aussies.

"That is what tours like this can do to people. You are getting beat up most days for the whole tour - it has to have some kind of effect. We need to change the momentum fast on this trip and make sure we try to win a couple of these last three games to get into the finals. You can't keep performing to the standard we have in the last week or so and expect to go to the World Cup in good shape, that is nonsense."

Vaughan says the two collapses in Adelaide shocked him but insists most of the problems are psychological and not a reflection of his team-mates' abilities.

"You can't defend the way we have batted, we have to work out what is going wrong with our thought processes in the middle," he added. "A lot of the times we are getting out, it is the thinking that is wrong and that is purely mental. It is not technique."
