888 Online Casino To Sponsor World Snooker Championship

Snooker's World Championship has a new sponsor after the sport's governing body signed a lucrative multi-million pound deal.

World Snooker have announced a new five-year deal with Online Casino and poker company 888, with a view to the agreement being extended in the future.

The news comes on the back of a new sponsor for the Masters, which began on Sunday at the Wembley Conference Centre. SAGA Insurance came in at the 11th hour to back the game's most prestigious invitation event.

But with a sponsor secured for the World Championship, the final of which attracted 7.8million television viewers last year, the future of snooker looks healthy.

It is hoped both new deals will help attract sponsors for future events, and in addition help the growth of the sport worldwide.

It is also hoped that there will be an increase in prize money next season, and even more ranking events in the near future.

Embassy sponsored the World Championship for 30 years, before being forced to withdraw their support following legislation which banned tobacco advertising.

However, World Snooker have worked tirelessly to secure 888 as the World Championship title sponsor, an agreement welcomed by chairman Sir Rodney Walker.

"This new sponsorship deal is very exciting and significant for World Snooker," said Walker. "The World Championship is one of the highlights of the sporting year and I'm delighted to welcome, what I believe will be, another successful sponsorship partnership. We have agreed a multi-million partnership with 888 and are looking forward to establishing a long and prosperous partnership. This agreement marks a milestone in snooker in the UK and comes at the end of nine good months for the sport. We've announced a good profit, signed a five-year deal for television coverage with the BBC, and 2006 will see us open our first snooker academy, to be based at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield."

John Anderson, 888's chief executive, has also welcomed the new deal. "We feel the sport has tremendous opportunities," he said. "I am personally delighted and it's an amazing opportunity to get into something big. We're looking forward to developing a beneficial and successful relationship."
