Another Big Moment for Day-Lewis
This year’s Academy Awards ceremony saw British actors taking the spotlight. The award for best actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis for his lead role in There Will Be Blood. The British actor is regarded as being eccentric in his approach to his film performances. Whatever he does seems to work for him as this is his second Academy Award. The first one he received was way back in 1990 for the film My Left Foot. His performance was considered extraordinary. This film portrayed the incredible endurance of the human spirit against the odds.
In 1994, Day-Lewis was again nominated for an Oscar for the film In The Name of the Father, although in this instance he did not receive the award. The actor is considered different from many stars because he avoids the Hollywood scene. After he completes a film Day-Lewis disappears from the limelight. However, he is prepared to attend the Academy Awards ceremony to accept his nominations.
The actor was born in London. His grandfather was Sir Michael Balcon who ran the Ealing Studios. Sir Michael is regarded as being an influential personality in British film. Daniel Day-Lewis is the son of Cecil Day-Lewis who is England’s Poet Laureate. The family connections continue as Daniel Day-Lewis is the son-in-law of Arthur Miller, the well known playwright. It is thought that growing up surrounded by a creative family influenced his attitude towards shunning a Hollywood lifestyle.
Day-Lewis is father to Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis, born in 1995, from his relationship with Isabelle Adjani. The couple had a relationship that lasted from 1989 to 1994. Both Day-Lewis and Adjani are known for leading unconventional lifestyles. Daniel Day-Lewis is now married to Rebecca Miller and has two sons with her.
The actor has been in the spotlight for more than just his acting ability. He has also been on a variety of lists. The Empire Magazine placed him as number 25 on their list of Top 100 Stars of All Time. People Magazine listed him as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World. On more than one occasion Day-Lewis was offered the part of Aragorn in the highly acclaimed Lord of the Rings.
It is a little known fact that Daniel Day-Lewis is highly skilled at woodwork. He is able to produce pieces of enduring quality and beauty. It has been said that working with his hands keeps him grounded. He is considered as a complex and multi-faceted individual. The actor has stated that he was made fun of because of his Jewish and Irish ancestry. He always felt like an outsider and so he created an imaginary fantasy world for himself.
