Baby thrown from 3rd floor fire survives
A desperate father threw his six-month old baby from a 3rd floor window when the building caught fire and was overwhelmed with smoke.
Smoke poured out of the windows as the terrifying inferno took hold.
Amazingly, after falling 40 feet, the baby fell safely into the arms of a waiting police officer, alive and unharmed.
A passer-by photographed the astonishing drop, as onlookers stared, horrified.
The dramatic event took place in Ludwigshafen, Germany, on the day of carnival celebrations, which meant that a lot of people were crowded into the house. Most of the residents and people inside were Turkish.
Some parents passed their children to emergency service workers on the lower levels, and other jumped from the windows, panicked and with no alternative.
Tragically, nine people were killed in the fire including several children, and many more were injured. The baby’s parents are recovering in hospital from their injuries.
The building was old and had a wooden staircase, which caught fire in seconds and prevented escape.
Reports of arson are unconfirmed and investigations are being carried out. Fears are that this could have been a racially motivated attack.
