The Write Stuff - Helen
Fielding
"Writers don't need
love - all they require is money," said playwright John
Osbourne. But these authors seem to have plenty of
both.
Helen Fielding -
£20 million
Responsible for the
addition to the English language of the catchword
"singletons", Helen
Fielding appealed
to every woman everywhere through her character Bridget
Jones, putting the plight of the modern woman in an
endearingly familiar light. Readers saw flashes of
themselves as they followed the delightfully dysfunctional
Bridget through performance anxiety at work, ever failing
diets and a longing for love.
The success of Fielding's
novel Bridget Jones's Diary was compounded by the triumphant
film of the book, starring Renee Zelwegger and Hugh Grant,
and the film version of the second book, Bridget
Jones: The Edge of Reason.
The first book grew out of
a newspaper column Fielding was commissioned to write as
herself, for The Independent and The Daily Telegraph in the
late 1990s. "I said no", Fielding recalls, "because I
thought it was hopelessly exposing and embarrassing. But I
offered to make up a comic exaggerated fictional character -
one that I'd been playing with for a sitcom: the girl who's
the embodiment of the banana skin joke, optimistic with
grand aspirations. "I'm not going to sleep with him" - cut
to her in bed with him. The irony is that everybody thinks
she's me anyway. I thought I'd be sacked after six weeks for
being so trivia but then it became a huge success. That's
when I said, 'It's me! It's me! I wrote it!'"
Helen Fielding, who was
born in the North of England, studied at Oxford University
and went on to work in TV at the BBC. Her first novel, Cause
Celeb, was based on her experience while filming
documentaries in Africa for Comic Relief. Since the success
of her books and spin off movies, Fielding has had a son
with partner Kevin Curran, a writer for the
Simpsons.
