Seven Ways To Create Your Own
Luck
Don't wait for Lady
Luck to smile on you - manufacture some magic of your
own.
We've all heard tales of
incredible good fortune or miraculous escape. The man who
won a million dollars on one spin of the wheel or the woman
who walked away from a ten story fall without so much as a
scratch. But what makes some people consistently lucky while
for others luck is just a four letter word? According to new
research it seems that Lady Luck might not be as fickle as
we think. Luck can in fact be learned.
1. Be
Optimistic
Think of the luckiest
person you know,. Chances are, he or she is a cheerful
extrovert who approaches life in an open and relaxed way.
There is a reason for this. Optimistic people understand
that they generate their own luck. Moreover, lucky people do
not dwell on their past misfortunes.
These fortunate people
also know that success often depends on cooperating rather
than competing. In this way, their interactions with other
people are positive and the opportunity for useful
networking is increased. By trusting others, lucky people
create more opportunities for luck to find them.
2. Listen To Your
Instincts
Lucky people trust others,
and they also trust themselves. They follow their hunches
and have the courage to act on their intuition. Think of the
many people who follow their instincts and struck it lucky
as a result. In 1976 Anita Roddick followed her gut feeling
and opened a shop selling organic beauty products. She named
it The Body Shop and today Dame Anita Roddick's fortune is
an estimated $200 million.
3. Be Open To New
Experiences
There is a reason why
lucky people always seem to be in the right place at the
right time. They are open to noticing chance opportunities
that might lead to a lucky break. Professor wiseman has
conducted many experiments on luck over the past 10 years.
In one, he asked a group of people to count the number of
photographs that appeared in a newspaper. People who
considered themselves unlucky took twice as long to count
the photos as those who considered themselves lucky. Why?
For the simple reason that on the second page Professor
Wiseman had placed a large notice that read "Stop counting,
there are 43 photographs in this newspaper."
The unlucky people had
failed to see the half page notice because they were so
focused on finding all the photos. In other words, they
missed random opportunities because of anxiety. Lucky
people, on the other hand, are more open and relaxed. They
are not afraid to break their routine and try new things.
This natural curiosity can lead to an unexpected lucky
break. Remember, every chance you take is a chance to
win.
4. Learn From Your
Mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes
but what defines your luck quotient is how you react to
them. While unlucky people brood over what went wrong and
what could have been, lucky people see mistakes as an
opportunity to learn rather than as failures. Lucky people
assess what went wrong and then move on. Thee perfect
example of how perseverance leads o striking it lucky lies
in the humble light bulb. As Alex Rovira and Fernardo Trias
de Bes point out in their best seller Good Luck: Creating
The Conditions For Success In Life And Business, after more
than 1,000 failed attempts Thomas Edison was asked if he
felt discouraged. "Not at all" he replied. "Now I definitely
know more than a thousand ways not to make a light bulb."
Sure enough, not long after that Edison created a successful
light bulb and changed the world forever.
5. Don't Point
Fingers
Instead of blaming their
misfortune on others, lucky people take responsibility for
their own actions. When they encounter a set back they
consider to what extent their actions played a role, take
steps to make sure that it doesn't happen again and then
move on. The night before an important audition, three
drunks attacked a relatively unknown Australian actor. Even
though the attack left the actor looking beaten and tired,
he did not allow himself to be a victim. Instead he went to
the audition. As look would have it, the part was for a
tough looking scarred character and the actor got the part.
The film in question was Mad Max and the actor was Mel
Gibson.
6. Expect Good
Luck
Lucky people expect their
future to be full of good fortune. In this way they create
self fulfilling prophecies that harness the power of the
human imagination to generate good luck and positive
situations. As sports psychologists have claimed,
visualising yourself as a winner is a surefire way to make
your dreams a reality. When Professor Wiseman studied the
power of superstition he found that lucky people tended
towards positive talismans like four leaf clovers or a
rabbit's foot. Unlucky people, however, were more concerned
with avoiding bad luck by crossing their fingers and not
walking under ladders. In The Luck Factor Wiseman suggests
that, by allowing themselves to become anxious about
misfortune, unlucky people actually invited bad luck into
their lives.
7. Don't
Hesitate
When good fortune comes
knocking, lucky people recognise the opportunity and act
immediately. According to Rovira and Trias de Bes, lucky
people do not procrastinate. When they are confronted by a
problem or an opportunity they do one of three things: they
either act immediately to solve the problem, delegate it or
forget about it. In this way lucky people stay focused and
save their energy for getting what they want.
